Nature news

It’s a fresh start for many this April, as the clocks change just in time for the month to begin. More sunlight is an opportunity to spend more time outside enjoying your local area! Wildlife comes alive this time of year as many little creatures emerge from hibernation and birds return from migration.

Bats, bees and hedgehogs are on the move after a long hibernation, and keep an eye on local or garden ponds as tadpoles start to hatch and swim around. Creepy crawlies also make more of an appearance, so look out for ladybirds starting to appear.

Things to do:

  • Ladybirds, hedgehogs and bats like to munch on insects, so you can plant flowers and plants that attract insects and feed the little creatures around you!

  • Avoid cutting hedges as birds will be nesting and calling those hedges home!

  • Bees will be buzzing for some yummy nectar, so make sure to plant some flowers like bluebells, forget-me-nots or primroses.

Food in season

Expand your recipe collection as well as your garden this April! Enjoy incorporating asparagus and purple-sprouting broccoli into your meals and maybe rhubarb crumble for dessert! Spring has also sprung as Spring Onions and Spring Greens are ready for harvest. It’s also time to sow any lettuce, onions, leeks and peas; alongside cucumbers, pumpkins and squashes if you have a greenhouse!

If you’re a fan of foraging there’s lots of edible flowers and wild garlic growing in forests, however it is better to do so with an experienced forager as some plants may be dangerous!

Rocket, Wild Garlic, Round Lettuce, Spring Onions, Spring Greens, Cauliflower, New Potatoes, Spinach, Watercress, chives, Dill, Rhubarb

Oceans Away

Written by Dani Seatter and illustrated by Anna Stead

Ages: 3+ years

This beautifully illustrated book tells the simple story of life in the ocean, but with an unexpected twist. Your little one will enjoy meeting the sea creatures who think they’ve found a new friend.

An incredibly gentle introduction to our environment, the problem of waste and how we can all take care of our planet.

Oceans Away is a wonderful conversation starter for slightly older children and a reminder that when we throw something ‘away’ it always goes somewhere.

Available here now.

Oh to be in England now that April’s there.
