The blue whales story

It’s our planet too, ruling the oceans is what we do…

We are the biggest beast the world has seen, a colossal giant, king of the marine;
Our sheer size is tricky to comprehend, imagine three buses lying end to end!

 Our huge thumping heart is as big as a car, its thunderous beat can be heard from afar;
As loud as a plane when we moan and groan, the noisiest creature this world has known.

 Us seafaring mammals need air to breath, though our clever blowhole is not used to sneeze.
The ocean is home whether warm or cold, winter in the Tropics, summer in the Poles.

 The sea turns pink with millions of krill, we spend days getting fat by eating our fill;
We may be humongous but our food is quite small, four tonnes of grub is our daily haul.

 Our funny shaped mouth is a bit like a sieve, it filters the food that we need to live.
When the sea starts to freeze, we set off for home, we’re graceful swimmers, travelling mostly alone.

 A three-tonne baby when we are born, we guzzle on milk from dusk until dawn;
We grow super fast to reach our full size and live ‘til we’re ninety, we’re really quite wise!

 A natural marvel, yet we do a great job, the ocean food chain relies on our pod!
Our nutrient rich poop has a job to do, who’d have thought such good could come from a poo!

 There’s a sense of wonder at our size, but the threats are many and can’t be denied.
As the seas start to warm our food supply wanes, we must travel further, increasing our range.

 Relentlessly hunted for oil and meat, yet we’re not quite ready to admit defeat;
Whaling has slowed but is still a great fear, also ship strikes, pollution and fishing gear.

 For each of us now there was once twenty, the way things are going the sea will be empty;
To be here in the future we’ll have to fight, to spare a thought for us with our plight.

 There’s only a few of us left on the planet, help save the seas, so we don’t have to panic.
We may be too big for a home in the zoo, but remember, it’s still our planet too!
